What to do if you have not yet filed your tax return

  • You know, if you are an individual, you have the opportunity to file an extension and an extension gives you the right to file the tax return up until, typically, October 15th each year. Now this year, I believe that October 15th fell on a Sunday if I’m correct. It did, which means you actually had until October 16th, Monday, to file your taxes.
  • You are now marked as a non-filer in the eyes of the IRS and if you ever need help from the IRS, for example, removing a penalty or getting a payment plan, anything like that, the IRS can actually deny your request because you’re not considered a ‘good tax-paying citizen’ because you filed late so definitely get your tax return in as fast as you can.
  • You can also call the Society of CPAs in your state. You know, we work across the country but let’s say for example you’re in New York and you want a local CPA, someone that you can sit down with face to face, in person, and have them help you with your returns.

Hey everybody. This is Shauna, your Tax Goddess coming to you live from Scottsdale, Arizona with this happy lovely weather. It’s a little bit warm still, I can’t wait for Halloween to finally get here, I’m so excited. Are you guys excited? Anyway, I wanted to talk to you about what to do if you didn’t file your taxes. You know, if you are an individual, you have the opportunity to file an extension and an extension gives you the right to file the tax return up until, typically, October 15th each year. Now this year, I believe that October 15th fell on a Sunday if I’m correct. It did, which means you actually had until October 16th, Monday, to file your taxes.

Well, it’s a little bit past October 16th so what do you do if you have not filed your taxes? First things first, get them filed, super important. Make sure you reach out to your CPA, to your tax preparer, whoever’s working with you on your tax returns, get them filed. You are now marked as a non-filer in the eyes of the IRS and if you ever need help from the IRS, for example, removing a penalty or getting a payment plan, anything like that, the IRS can actually deny your request because you’re not considered a ‘good tax-paying citizen’ because you filed late so definitely get your tax return in as fast as you can.

Secondly, if you don’t have a preparer, if you need help, reach out to someone good. Of course, you can always reach out to us here at Tax Goddess and we can either help you or recommend a good professional in your area. You can also call the Society of CPAs in your state. You know, we work across the country but let’s say for example you’re in New York and you want a local CPA, someone that you can sit down with face to face, in person, and have them help you with your returns. Definitely, reach out to the State Society of CPAs in that state, they can definitely give you recommendations to a great CPA or tax preparer for your needs.

Hope you’re having a great day and if you guys have any questions on how to get your tax return filed after the deadline, definitely give us a shout out at TaxGoddess.com, happy to help you any way we can. Thanks!
