- Make your top three list every night and tackle those tasks first thing the next morning before anything else gets done.
- If you get your big boulders done for the day, there’s plenty of space left for all the little things that come up in life.
- Business owners start doing all these little things, and then it’s two or three or five in the afternoon and none of those big boulders, those top three things that they had on their list gets done.
Hey, guys. It’s Shauna, the Tax Goddess, here with you live from Reykjavík. I am still out and about traveling the world. You know, this past week has been really, really, interesting. Lots of travel issues, I suppose is the best way to think about that, but what I wanted to talk to you guys about today is – I get asked a lot how I get so much done in a day. Of course, when I’m out traveling, what I’m really focusing on is trying to make sure that all of our client works gets done, and everybody is happy, and that kind of thing, and then of course, traveling and enjoying life.
But one of the things that I do every day – it doesn’t matter whether it’s a personal day or a business day – is the night before, I will write down just like on a little piece of paper, scrap, or whatever what are the top three things that I’m going to get done the next day. Basically, I do not get on with anything other, you know like random tasks of like for example, if I’m at home, if I’m in Arizona, and I’ve got some paperwork to file or some emails to return or phone calls to make, I do not do any of that, none of it, until my top three things for that day are complete.
There’s the very famous story, and I’ll try and link in the Facebook video below to the best YouTube video I can find on the story. But I really talks about if you get your big boulders done for the day, there’s plenty of space left for all the little things that come up in life, right? …Those emails, those phone calls. I mean unless one of those is on your big three, your top three. Now really why I bring this whole thing up is that I feel like what often happens, a business owner wakes up in the morning. Their mind is already moving 50 million miles an hour, and they are looking at getting all of this stuff done, and often, what will happen is they get off track. They start doing all these little things, and then it’s two or three or five in the afternoon and none of those big boulders, those top three things that you had to get done today, none of them got done.
You know, my piece of advice to all those new business owners out there, and to all those business owners that have been in business for a while, try building the habit. The night before, write out – you know, because your brain is still on it and active – what is most important for you to get done that next day. What are your top three? Write those down and don’t do anything, nothing business related until you get those done, those top three done.
So that’s my top piece of advice for today. I’ll see what kind of a YouTube video I can find linking to the whole story about where the three boulders, the top three came from, and if you guys have any questions, reach out to me.
