Create a Job, Don’t Wait for One!

Him: So what do you do?

Me: I’m self-employed. I’m a freelancer.

Him: Oh, I’m sorry. What do you want to do?

Me: Um, excuse me?

In this excellent article by Afford Anything’s author there is a great discussion on creating your own job versus waiting for someone else to create one for you.  Today we are hearing about more and more economic downturn and higher rates of unemployment, however there are millions of small business owners out there who are making it and making it big!

Timothy Ferris, one of my new favorite authors, in his book The 4 Hour Work Week, discusses and reminds us that it was in tough times that giants were born (Ford, Rockefeller, etc.).  Now is not the time to sit back, whimper that you don’t have a job, and wait.  Now is the time to go out, create what you want in life, and be successful!

I have been preaching this to my business owners for years, as I specialize in the business owner and their families.  I believe that the world is made for people to create and enjoy their lives, to do what their passion calls them to do.  For many people that does not seem to be waiting on others to hand them their day’s work.

Now, I realize that not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur.  What if you just changed your perspective on what you do now.  Not everyone is just handed a job (JOB = bad word in my world).  You had to learn a skill, sell yourself to someone to pay you for that skill, and run with the politics, etc. in the environment that you are in.  Is that not the same as if you were in the environment of the great wide world!  Even if it is just your city or town?  Just a thought.

I would love to hear some success stories in these trying times!  If you have one, please comment and let us know how you got to your version of success.
