- Why do we ask a ton of questions? The reason why we do that is because we are trying to make sure to squeeze every little last dollar out of the government and keep it in your pocket.
- If you are having your taxes done by someone who just takes your information, doesn’t really ask you a lot of questions, drops those numbers onto the return, they’re going to miss deductions for you.
- What questions have you been asked?
Hey everyone, it’s Shauna your Tax Goddess sitting in an airport. As you guys know, I love to travel and now that tax season is over, I am out doing it.
Today we are here to talk about how do you know if your tax CPA, if your strategic tax coach, your tax preparer, whatever you want to call us, how do you know if they are getting you the best bottom-dollar, making sure that you’re saving the most amount of money that you possibly can?
Really in my opinion, that all comes down to how many questions are they asking you. If you’re a client of ours, I know, I know, it’s terribly annoying, but you know that we ask you a ton of questions, and the reason why we do that is because we are trying to make sure to squeeze every little last dollar out of the government and keep it in your pocket. So if you are having your taxes done by somebody who just takes your information, doesn’t really ask you a lot of questions, drops those numbers onto the return, unless that person is a psychic and knows everything about you and your business and your world, they’re going to miss deductions for you.
Sometimes those questions are really basic, like “Did you get married?” “Did you have a new child this year?” But in other times, they’re a little more complicated and your answers can actually make a difference. Things like for example, “Did you lease a new car this year?” If you leased a new car, what type of car was it? Was it a big car like an SUV, or was it a normal car like a smaller car? Is it a Smart Car? How many miles did you drive on that car? Business miles, personal miles. What about home office? A lot of people don’t even know that things like maintenance for the house, so lawn care, pool care, this kind of thing can be a deduction for your home office.
If your tax preparer, your CPA, your whatever, whoever does your taxes or the box, if you’re using the box, don’t use the box. You need to find a preparer, you need to find a specialist, somebody who will ask you a lot of questions if you really want to save and keep that money in your pocket rather than the government’s.
