Write off my gym membership

I get asked this question a lot. Can I write off my gym membership?

A lot of it depends on which gym you attend, why you attend it. If for example you go to more of a country club type gym, where really your fees are much higher than you would be paying if you went to an LA fitness or 24-hour fitness then yes you can deduct a portion of your membership as marketing expense.

Be careful with this though. If you ever get into an IRS audit you will have to be able to prove to the agent that you earned business based on your membership at your gym. So make sure you could keep good track of who you’ve met, why you’ve met them, and how much money you’ve earned of knowing and having your membership.
